She'd fought and fought and fought for equal rights, for women in Ursa Hollow to be able to serve on the Elder Council. To be able to become Alpha. And for all members of the Ursa Hollow den to be able to vote on the Elder positions. And when faced with a final warning of exile from the Council of Elders, she’d discovered she still couldn't back down.

And so, she had lost her home, her people, her everything.

But now, when faced with Andreas telling her he cared for her, wanted her, she found herself outside in the cold. Gripping the bottom of her shirt, ready to pull it over her head. Ready to ditch all her clothing and shift into her bear for the third time in one day. So she could keep running.

Coward. The thought halted her mid-step. And she found herself panting, unable to get enough air, even though she stood less than fifty yards from her house. What the hell? This wasn't her. She turned back to look at her home.

Through the windows, her bright, cheerful lights called to her. Andreas was in there, too. But this was her territory. Her home.

No way was she going to let him chase her away.

Suddenly angry, she strode back to the house, through the front door, and into the kitchen where Andreas didn't seem to have moved a muscle. Before he could speak, she started at him.

“What the hell are you talking about? You're making zero sense. Are you just trying to mess with my head? What right do you have to talk to me like that in my own house?” She knew she wasn't letting him get a word in edgewise to explain himself, but she couldn't seem to stop the anger erupting from her lips. “You've done nothing but torture me since I was a kid. Tease me. Okay, granted, you were nice to me sometimes. You let me follow you and Lorne around everywhere. Stood up for me. Let me cry on your shoulder a couple of times when I was a teenager. But that doesn't mean—”

He watched her, something like hope kindling in his gaze.

“Shit.” He had teased her, hadn't he? But he hadn't been cruel—not ever. He'd been like a kid tugging on a girl’s pigtails—literally, her ponytail, at least. She’d found the whole thing annoying and frustrating because he hadn't seemed to realize her crush on him was real. But what if he'd been trying to show her the same thing all along?

“Why didn't you ever say anything?” She placed her hands on the countertop and leaned against it, all the anger draining from her body, along with the energy that came with it.
